Birth and Early Life
  • ->  Born on 31 January 1673 in a small village in Brittany, Western France.

  • ->  France was experiencing a severe economic and social crisis with 95% illiteracy.

  • ->  The conditions in France set the stage for the French Revolution, which came almost a century later.

Founding of the Montfort Brothers

  • St. Louis de Montfort founded the Brothers to educate the illiterate population.
  • He faced significant challenges and had only five followers by the time of his death on 28 April 1716.
  • Initially, Montfortian Institutions were limited to Western France.

Expansion Post-French Revolution

  • During the French Revolution, there was anarchy until Napoleon's rise.
  • By 1821, the Brothers decided to expand beyond France due to limited growth and discouragement.

Montfortian Institutions in India

  • The Montfortian presence in India began on 11 September 1903 with three French Brothers arriving in Pondicherry.
  • The first Montfortian Institution in India started in 1904 at Tindivanam, Tamil Nadu, as a technical institution.
  • The first English Medium School, "Montfort School," was established in 1918 in Yercaud.
  • From 1918 to 1998, Montfortian Institutions grew from one to nearly 150, spanning almost all states and Union Territories in India.

Montfortian Institutions are present in thirty countries, including Canada, Columbia, Peru, Fiji, and the Tonga Islands.
